The lyrics to “Burning Chrome” by William Gibson are based on the story of two professional hackers, Automatic Jack and Bobby Quine. Jack purchases unknown software which turns out to be sophisticated and nearly untraceable Russian hacking software. Bobby decided to use this software to break in and steal money from a high-level, well-connected criminal known as Chrome. After Jack agrees, the two hackers successfully break in and steal money, as well as remove Chrome. These two characters live in a futuristic world where human anatomy and customizable technology have become one and both software and hardware have become crucial to the people of this time. In this essay I will briefly explain how software and hardware play a crucial role within the plot and how they differ from each other. Software is instructions, commands, or data that direct the operation of computer systems. Hardware is the physical aspect of computers, telecommunications, and other devices. Hardware such as electronic circuits and other components of a computer use software or programs to make the technology do things. Hardware is permanent and inflexible, while software or programming can be easily varied and modified. You can put a completely new program into the hardware and have it create a completely new experience for the user. People can modify the modular configurations that most computers come with by adding new adapters or cards that extend the computer's capabilities. In the text the character called Bobby Quine is a software specialist, but before retiring from hacking, he looked for one last big job. That's why he uses his software skills to rob the big crime boss, Chrome. Another character in the... center of the card... the human being and the limitations that a human being has, were demolished in the world created by William Gibson. In conclusion William Gibson created a cyberpunk/postmodernist tale that not only blurred the physical state between mechanics and human anatomy, but also blurred the line between the natural and virtual worlds. It is making the reader think about how both software and hardware have affected the natural world. Gibson's fictional world would not have been possible without the existence of software and hardware, which is why the distinction between them is crucial and plays a different role within the text. Without these two things, the reader would not be able to understand and relate to Gibson's vision of how our society is interconnected with advances in technology and today's normality will no longer exist in the future..
