Character Analysis of April RaintreeApril Raintree is the main protagonist of the book In Search of April Raintree by Beatrice Mosionier. During her childhood she was embarrassed of being Metis and, as she took after her mother's pale Irish skin, being able to blend into white society, she hid her native ancestry. Through her first adoptive parents, the Dions, they were very kind to April, this continued to make April feel accepted in society and would continue to hide her Native heritage. She wanted to feel like a little white girl, and they made her feel like one. After Mrs. Dion becomes ill, April is placed with the DeRosiers. The DeRosiers were both physically and verbally abusive towards April and Cheryl. Throughout this April he would continue to try to suppress his Native heritage as much as possible. The DeRosiers children continue to harass April by spreading rumors about her and managing her life at school, and she is called "Gramma Squaw". Mrs. DeRosiers allegedly made the situation worse by giving her clothes that were considered very ugly, and would not allow April to alter them by sewing things on them. This continues April's need to become rich and important, and says "if I became that rich and important, people wouldn't care that I had a prod metis for a sister." This quote shows how she doesn't consider herself a proud Metis, or even a Metis. After April writes the Christmas Story, incorporating things into her life while living with the DeRosiers, she is transferred to St. Bernadette's Academy. While at Santa Bernadette he tells a very big lie. She tells all her friends that her parents died in a plane crash, this shows how she continues to look down on her legacy. Once April and Cheryl are free from custody... half of the card... .after opening up to April, she leaves and never returns. After April and Roger desperately search for Cheryl, they search for several weeks and have no idea where she has gone. One night, Cheryl's friend Nancy calls April and explains that she was going to leave with her, but she left suddenly and she believes she will do something bad. April remembers Cheryl telling her how their mother committed suicide by jumping off the Louis Bridge. When they arrive at the bridge a group of people say they saw a woman jump off and commit suicide about five minutes before they arrived. April learns what Cheryl has been through in more depth when April looks through her journals. He discovers he has a nephew named Henry Liberty. For the first time, April doesn't look down on her Native ancestry. It took her sister's death for April to find her identity..
