The apostle Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles, is a central figure both in the Christian tradition and in the thought and writings of the New Testament. With such a crucial place, it is vital that we come to better understand his life and thought, as well as the world in which he and, more specifically, his theology took shape. With this in mind, this essay will seek to explore Paul's conversion and experience of calling as understood in Acts, and his personal references to it, drawing from them the ways in which this period was significant for Paul's theological thought , as expressed in his letters and work. To achieve this, we will begin by addressing the debate about calling and/or conversion, arguing that the term 'conversion and calling' best encompasses Paul's experience as reported. From there we will explore the theological implications of this conversion and calling, particularly how a peculiar Christocentrism develops and forces new understandings and revisions of his past theological insights. Before we begin this essay proper, it is important to first justify our argument that Paul should be considered both called and converted. This is by no means a consensus position, as within Pauline studies and primarily arising from the New Perspective discussions on Paul, there is contestation over the terminology and meaning behind the word "conversion" and whether it is actually applicable to Paul at all. A great example of this is in the work of Krister Stendahl. Stendahl argues forcefully that assigning Paul the label “convert” suggests a disconnection, a complete departure from his previous religious life and the adoption of something new.
