Once they arrived they were not treated with dignity. At the camp the prisoners were stripped naked and put on a stripped uniform that was too thin for the cold, they shaved the prisoners' heads and tattooed a number on their arm; which represented their new identity, and they were given wooden shoes that often got stuck in the mud. The prisoners were woken up by a siren, imagine hundreds of people finishing in time for selection. The selection is the moment when the Nazis decided who was ready to be killed. For breakfast they were given 10 ounces of bread with a small piece of salami or an ounce of margarine, tasteless coffee, without sugar. They worked about 11 or 12 hours a day. For lunch they were served soup with a liter of water with some carrots and turnips. The final meal was bread with rotten salami or margarine and jam. The camps had no heat or running water and only a few toilets that could only be used for 10 seconds. You had to ask permission to use the toilet and if the Nazi guard wouldn't let you use the toilet then you had to use the food/water bowl. When it was time to go to sleep, the prisoners lay 10 in a bed and each had to lie on their side to fit. There were many different insects that could cause diseases such as bedbugs and lice. They also slept with a bowl or cup to prevent it from being stolen by other prisoners. Many times a prisoner would wake up to find someone dead in his bed. Each person received a bowl
