A survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) revealed that one in three cosmetic surgeons have seen an increase in procedures on patients between the ages of 13 and 19 years due to exposure to social media (Elliott). Frederick N. Lukash, MD, FACS who has a private practice in New York City and Manhasset, NY, commented on how teen plastic surgery can become an overused market because teens are exposed to too much uncensored information in the media and how this influences teenagers to go under the knife. He suggested that teenagers pay little attention to the risks of the procedures and this puts plastic surgeons on the defensive, forcing them to spend a lot of time explaining why they don't need the surgery. He states, “The media needs to be educated about the risks, benefits, and outcomes of plastic surgery, as well as the depth and breadth of the specialty” (Lukash). Other surgeons have also found teen cosmetic surgery alarming and have advised them to wait to undergo cosmetic surgery until their bodies are finished growing (“About Face”
