Topic > The importance of the Cuban embargo - 1985

public opinion no longer feels the need for the embargo against Cuba. The poll, conducted in January 2014, showed that nationwide 56% of Americans support the normalization of relations with Cuba (Planas, 2014). In the state most affected by the embargo, Florida, the percentage of people against the embargo amounts to 63%. The lack of support is not only found among the American public, but the poll also found that 60% of Democrats and 52% of Republicans favor greater engagement with Cuba (Planas, 2014). Now that polls show a majority of Americans oppose the embargo, the likelihood that Congress will address it is much higher. Of course, there are still some people who agree with the embargo because the Cuban government has not changed and is still under Castro's rule, but these people must understand that the only way the Cuban government can change is whether to have a positive role model. Their last strong connection was with the Soviet Union, also a communist state. It is up to the United States to strengthen relations with Cuba and show Cubans what democracy looks like, in hopes of forcing changes in the Cuban country.
