Equiano survived ten years of cruel slavery and purchased his freedom with the help of his last master Robert King. He then continued to write his account of the situation. The narrative was a personal statement of the slave trade to help urge the British government to abolish slavery altogether. At the time of this writing, Equiano was considered an improvementist. An improvementist is a person who prefers to improve something by improving it (Donaldson). Only towards the end of his writings was Equiano considered an abolitionist.
