For Antigua, most enslaved Africans came from the west coast. “Most Antiguan planters preferred slaves from Ghana and Dahomey. When they could not get slaves from these countries, they took shipments from Calabar, Angola and Morso. . . The slaves that Antiguan planters loved most were the Caramantee, Fantee, and Poppa Negroes. (Samuel, 120).” This example provides a direct link to the ancestors of the black population currently living in Antigua. According to a report from the governor of Antigua in 1676, the island was capable of purchasing 1000 slaves per year.” (Gasper 68). This has led to the African population steadily increasing and surpassing the European population. In 1736, enslaved Africans made up 85% of Antigua's population, including approximately 24,400 on the island (Dash). This demographic distinction led white planters to be extremely abusive towards enslaved Africans. As a result, an atmosphere was created in which white Antiguan society would seek to thwart any slave revolt, through whippings, dismemberments, hangings, burnings, castrations, and other inhumane atrocities.
