Bos, HM, Van Balen, F. and Van den Boom, DC (2007). Child adjustment and parenting in lesbian-parent planned families. American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 77, 38-48. doi: 10.1037/0002-9432.77.1.38 This study was conducted in the Netherlands. First, the authors studied the association between “parental characteristics” and “child rearing” factors. Second, they examined “child adjustment” in planned families with lesbian mothers and in families with heterosexual parents. 100 families of lesbian mothers were recruited through the Medical Center for Birth Control, same-sex parenting experts, the Dutch Homosexuality Advocacy Group, and advertisements in Lesbian magazine. 100 matched heterosexual parent families were recruited from two cities. Participants used various data collection methods such as questionnaires, observations (home visits) and diaries. Data were collected in three main areas: “child adjustment (internalized, externalized and problematic behaviors), parental characteristics (balance between work and family tasks, satisfaction with the partner as coparnet, degree of wanting a child, educational goals and justification ) and child education (emotional involvement, parental concern, assertion of power, induction, presence of support, respect for the child's autonomy, structure and setting limits). In both groups, coparent satisfaction with partner, concern as a parent, and assertion of power were related to externalizing and total problem behaviors in children. In both groups, a greater assertion of power, greater concern on the part of parents and a greater presence of support were linked to the children's internalization process... middle of paper... J.
