The excitement I felt as a child about going to Disney World is the same excitement I am overwhelmed with now about embarking on this one-of-a-kind experience. The Reggio Emilia approach is a much discussed topic in my training courses and continues to amaze me with the results obtained. Having the opportunity to experience this approach firsthand will change my life both as a person and as a future teacher. This exceptional approach requires attention to a philosophy that encourages students to learn from their experiences, peers, and the environment. For this philosophy to be successful there are six main factors that must be present. The first factor is the image of the child, they believe that a child is motivated. The poem describes all the ways a child can learn and how children are extremely expressive, and imagination plays a huge role in the child's search for knowledge and understanding, that's why expressive arts are seen as such an aspect important part of this philosophy. This leads to the third factor of this approach which is the design, the curriculum of this philosophy. The curriculum is based on children's interests, which are identified by the teacher by observing, listening and evaluating the children. Once interest is identified, the teacher must observe and be a resource for children, rather than being in control of what they believe is important to learn. This philosophy is also extraordinarily unique as it was created by parents and the community with the existence of Loris Malaguzzi, as parents understand their children's needs more. This is why this approach is so successful as everyone is involved in the child's learning. Another important aspect of this: Since I plan to become a special education teacher, I believe this approach would be extremely beneficial to this population of students. With children with disabilities, there is a strong focus on the child's abilities rather than things they might trip over. This is very important when working with people with disabilities as it makes them feel like they are good at things, as they have been told all their lives that they cannot accomplish anything because of their disability. I strive to build the confidence of my future students by using this approach in my classroom. This experience will also force me to learn to think on my feet, as I will be in a place I am unfamiliar with. Acquiring this skill will help me in my profession since as a teacher you never know what you may have to face, especially in special situations.
