Land could be used by farmers to grow crops. The peasants had to pay the rulers for this. The Ottomans managed to capture both land and sea. They had improved their technology and warfare skills by capturing Italian cities. For example, the capture of Constantinople in 1453 gave the Ottomans the advantage of being able to use captured cities to raise taxes and trade routes (Burbank & Cooper, 132). After capturing Constantinople, they traveled west and occupied more lands. Their improved technology and seafaring capabilities gave them a competitive advantage in warfare. On the other hand, the Spanish colonized the Americans and forced them to work on their lands to produce goods for export. Through the conquest of Latin America, the Spanish were able to take part in the Colombian exchange that brought goods to Europe, Africa, and America. Both the Ottomans and the Spanish participated in the slave trade by capturing slaves who became part of their workforce. The Spanish captured African slaves and brought them to Latin America to work on their farms. The law prohibited the enslavement of Islamic people. So the Ottomans had to capture the slaves
