Everyone has moments in life when they struggle. In “A Tale of White Slips of Paper Sticking Out of Your Pockets,” the characters struggle with ordinary problems and pray as usual. A man finds a coat that belongs to God and answers prayers or tries to. The character in the story doubts himself, but when he lost his overcoat he realized that he didn't know what to do without it. In the story, Brockmeier creates magical realism to create a symbol of faith. The author shows that faith is never easy by using a symbol of faith, magical elements and realistic features. From the symbol of the cloak a moral lesson is created. The coat represents faith and how faith is not easy, but it makes life richer. In the story, Kevin Brockmeier says, “He found a slip of paper that read: The only thing I ask is that you give my Cindy a few more years” (261). The slips of paper were prayers from people who are struggling or someone who just needed to pray. Faith is magical in all of us. The cloak symbolizes faith which creates a theme for the story.
