Topic > Biome Essay - 1144

The biome is a large area of the earth that is made up of land or water and is characterized by special characteristics (Kalman, 1997). It is also known as a vital zone with similar climate and soil adapted by plants, animals and other living organisms. Biome characteristics are mainly influenced by abiotic factors and the location of that particular biome. Abiotic factors are the non-living components present in the ecosystem, which include chemical components, temperature and weather conditions. Abiotic factors can establish the boundaries between each biome because the temperature and amount of annual rainfall influence the species of living organisms that are able to live in the area. Besides that, the location of the large area away from the equator also affects the characteristics of the biome. The climate will be warmer if it is located closer to the equator than the area farther from the equator. Biomes on earth are also characterized by the dominant flora and fauna that live in the area. Scientists classify biomes into five main classes: grassland, tundra, desert, aquatic, and forest (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1). The first type of biomes is grassland. Grasslands are believed to have existed in the world after the Pleistocene Ice Age. Grassland is defined as a large area dominated by grasses. One of the most distinguishable characteristics of grasslands is that “the dominant vegetation includes grasses, with geophytes and grasses also well represented” (Fuls, Bredenkamp, Van Rooyen & Theron, 1993, p. 345). Grasslands are divided into two: savannah and temperate grasslands. Savanna consists of scattered trees and covers a large area of Africa, Australia, South America and India. On top of that, rainfall in the savannah is only about 20 inches - 50 inches per year...... middle of paper...... as it is usually located near the equator with two distinct seasons : rainy and dry. Furthermore, its daylight duration is 12 hours. On the other hand, temperate forest covers eastern North America, northeastern Asia, and Europe. The temperate forest stands out from others in that it has a unique season with distinct winter, moderate climate and growing season of 140-200 days per year. The third type of forest is the boreal forest or taiga which represents the largest terrestrial biome. The boreal forest is found between 50 and 60 degrees north latitude and is found across the broad swath of Eurasia and North America. Furthermore, the seasons are divided into short periods of moderately hot summers and long dry winters. The boreal forest has a growing season of 130 days per year. Summer in the boreal forest is short while winter is long.
