Topic > The Disrespect of Women in the Romantic Era - 844

Women felt confined almost like a prison, as they were stuck at home, hidden from society. Just like in “Poor Singing Dame”, the poor woman was thrown into prison where she died just because she wouldn't stop expressing her feeling of happiness even though she wasn't rich. “Yes, wounded woman! stand up, assert your right! Woman! too long degraded, despised, oppressed; O born to rule partly despite the Law” (Barbauld, lines 1-3) and “He sent his bold servants with threats to prevent her, And she kept singing her sweet turns of phrase; In the end, an implacable old administrator sent her, who took her, all trembling, to prison!” (Robinson, lines 36-40). This shows that women have begun to feel the need to tell men to abandon their role as rulers and leaders in society, and instead accept that women can rule just as well as anyone else.
