Topic > A critique of the cult of teenage vampires in rural areas...

The article on the cult of vampires discussed some new and unusual issues facing our youth and the doctors who try to help them. This article answers several questions about why cults are attractive and who is attracted to them. The introduction discusses how animal and human murders are prompting the mental health community to take a hard look at the rise of vampire cults. These professionals believe that this morbid interest in vampirism grew from myths, games, especially the online variety, as well as the game Dungeons and Dragons. I disagree with the connection made to D and D; this game was very popular during my youth. Comparing D and D to online games in the vampire realm is like comparing apples and oranges; yes, they are both fruits, but that's about it. D and D were more role-playing and full-on journeys; while vampire games are about killing. Whether you are the victim or the perpetrator, blood will be shed, and lots of it. Vampires have been made heroes in the media, from The Count of Sesame Street to the misunderstood and sensual Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's novels. I found the section "Sects and their attraction" very interesting. Deutach and Miller described female cult members as having difficulty with guys, wanting to serve, wanting to feel connected, and being spiritual rather than strictly religious. Cult leaders are described as having certain characteristics such as “grandiosity, self-centeredness, manipulativeness, domination, superficial affection, poor interpersonal bonding, and lack of empathy, anxiety, and guilt. These girls are drawn into these groups by their overwhelming need to connect on basic human levels. Research describes cult membership as being lost in the middle of the paper system throughout childhood due to dysfunctional family life. I would like to know whether the events of their childhood led them to become cult members, prostitutes, murderers, or law-abiding citizens. I would then use this data to advocate for changes in parental rights and child abandonment. I think this was a fascinating study and I would be very interested to see a study done now. Vampires are Hollywood's hot and current trend for teens and adults. The Twilight films are aimed at teenagers and depict young love between a human and a vampire, as well as the werewolf loving the human. True Blood is an HBO drama that gives adults a high-octane sexual take on the love lives of vampires, werewolves, witches, and humans. I can only imagine the amount of vampire cults that are springing up around us. This is a topic that could and should be explored further.
