Gatsby buys a mansion across the street from Daisy, in the hopes that she will notice him. Living in upper-class society gave Gatsby a bad reputation, as he only became rich to impress Daisy and did not form bonds with other people. Every Saturday night Gatsby throws parties at his house. During his parties he doesn't hang out with anyone, some of the people who go to his house every weekend don't even know the color of his hair or the sound of his voice. Even though the rumors were all lies, Gatsby lets people say what they want and almost never makes an attempt to meet his guests. Fitzgerald explains: “As soon as I arrived I made an attempt to find my host, but the two or three persons of whom I asked where he was looked at me so astonished, and so vehemently denied any knowledge of his movements” ( Fitzgerald 43). Gatsby is only interested in connecting with people he knows can help them. She begins her friendship with her neighbor Nick because she is aware from Gatsby that Nick and Daisy are cousins, and asks Nick to invite her to tea at his house. Fitzgerald writes: “The modesty of the request shocked me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to the occasional moth ─ so that he could 'come' some afternoon to a stranger's garden” (Fitzgerald 78). Gatsby uses Nick as a tool to bring Daisy to his house, which amazes Nick because Gatsby waited 5 years to do such a simple yet ridiculous task.
