Imagine trying to function properly on four hours or less of sleep each night. Imagine a straight A student who just received the first “F” on a report card. Imagine sitting in sixth period anxiously watching the clock tick, waiting to leave class to go home and huddling in front of a seventeen-inch PC screen to log in. Imagine that personal insecurities increase to the point that ending life seems like a conceivable option to escape the cruel realities of the world. These are just some of the dangerous effects that some experience when using social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Many teens use these websites daily, hourly, and in some severe cases, even meticulously. A 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook the most used social networking service by monthly active users worldwide. Since the public is more likely to be exposed to the positive and fun side of social media, many users are completely unaware of the numerous dangers that lurk on the pages of the networks. Of course, there are positive effects to using social media responsibly. For example, Facebook makes it easier and cheaper to stay in touch with friends and family who live in a different state or country than calling them on the phone. Users can view photo albums and status posts about everyone's well-being. Meetings, sporting events and other occasions are easier to plan and spread the word on Facebook and Myspace. Instead of having to go through the hassle of purchasing and addressing several invitations and worrying about whether the invitations will arrive on time, you can create a single invitation and send it to over a thousand people in seconds.
