Using refrain, symbolism, personification and alliteration emphasized the points that TS Eliot was trying to make for his reader. Personification brings an inanimate object to life, which can symbolize a greater force influencing the narrator. For example, the narrator states, “For the yellow smoke that slides down the street / Rubbing its back on the window panes.” (Stanza 4, lines 2-3) In this particular quote, TS Eliot attributes some human characteristics to the yellow smoke. This yellow smoke not only has human characteristics, but symbolizes how the narrator will one day have to take that leap of faith. On top of this, if it weren't for the author's use of diction, these images would be difficult to follow. The use of words like rubbing and sliding helps the reader understand how smoke can be identified as a snake. In addition to using symbolism and personification, T. S. Eliot rhymes sporadically throughout his poetry. For example, the narrator states, “I saw the moment of my greatness falter / And I saw the eternal footman hold my coat and cackle.” (Stanza 13, lines 10-11) This quote not only rhymes, but creates imagery for the reader.
