The first people introduced are a couple, Agustin and Marcelo, who are well established in Chicago, Illinois. Marcelo explained his struggle to be gay and remain Catholic because as a child he prayed to God for a miracle to turn him “normal.” Marcelo has accepted himself and continues to practice religion even though Catholicism forbids being gay. Another man named David described being teased in his high school career for kissing another boy in third grade because of his sexuality. He moved to New York to get away from his childhood and to finally be happy in a place where he isn't judged. This homophobia among children instigates violence at school which is learned from parents and the community of others. The last person introduced in the film was a man who became a woman who was rejected by his family and had to leave his home to come home with hair extensions. This form of violence led Gabriela to abuse drugs and alcohol to deal with the pain of rejection. These three examples show how people have overcome cultural normality, but experienced all sorts of differences
