Most religions were designed to be patriarchal, Christians represent God as a man in art, and the selection of uniformly male popes and preachers supports this claim. Fritz identifies many different examples in the essay that allude to patriarchal undertones. One might be that the boys pick up rocks at first while the girls just chat with each other. Another is how Tessie's husband tells her to “shut up” after their family is chosen and Tessie complains (Oehlschlaeger). Jackson's decision to patriarchalize society in “The Lottery” makes sense since Christians have used it as a reliable tool to remain powerful, rendering half the population voiceless.
