Topic > How 9/11 Changed America - 1063

For this country, 9/11 is known as a devastating event but it brought us closer together as a nation. People across the country have been affected by this terrifying event. Especially those who were in the Twin Towers when the building was hit or those who tried to help save the people stuck in the building, be they colleagues or firefighters. The day 9/11 occurred, people were subjected to grief, anger, and hardship. The morning of September 11, 2001 began like any other normal day for many people. The situation changed very quickly when two airliners were hijacked while leaving Boston for Los Angeles. At 7:45 Rockford time, Flight Eleven struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. Flight eleven had 92 people on board. Eighteen minutes later Flight 175 hit the South Tower with 65 people on board. At 8:40 Flight 77 from Los Angeles to Washington was also hijacked with 64 people on board, hitting the Pentagon. The fourth and final plane to be hijacked that day was Flight 93 from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco with 64 people on board which had crashed near Pittsburgh around nine in the morning. When the two airliners hit the World Trade Center towers, about 1,100 people were trapped on or above the floors where the planes had struck. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the September 11 attacks. There were about nineteen terrorists who attacked the four planes, the terrorists were from the Middle East and were part of a group called Al Qaeda. Their leader Bin Laden was killed on May 1, 2011. Many people were scared, angry, and full of mixed emotions during and after this terrifying event. Myrtle Dahlberg, a Rock River Valley resident, said, “I'm stunned. It can't happen in this country." But the people who were probably… middle of the paper… cover 400 of the 429 airports across the country. Another thing used to detect explosives are canines, which are now also part of the security system used at airports. Box cutters could be passed through airport security as long as they were 4 inches or smaller, but since box cutters were used in the 9/11 hijacking they have been banned as of September 13, 2001. Since 9/11 our nation and the people in our nation have not been the same. The events of September 11th made people appreciate life more than before and made us recognize those who died and those who survived and what they experienced that terrible day. We as a nation have made many changes to our government and airport security. This tragic day has brought us together through organizations and through the survivors who share their story with the world.
