Topic > Extra Credit - 640

Going into Rpw 210 I had pretty low exceptions. Based on my previous experience in Rpw I expected a boring teacher, topics and assignments that would not teach me anything. But this lesson surprised me. Not only the teacher, but the readings and inputting or applying every day made this course enjoyable. Last year my Rhetoric and Professional Writing class was dreaded. Nobody took it seriously. If you looked around the room, most of the students were on their phones. The teacher tried but gave up halfway through the semester, making the class harder to attend. When it came to reading, we read stories that had no meaning. Then, while reading the stories, we had separate assignments about third world countries, our social class and family, and later, family heritage. No connection between the two. It became uncomfortable to reveal information about family or social class to a class where I didn't know anyone. I was hoping there would be a connection in the final but there never was. During the lesson we had to present handwritten summaries of what had happened in class. This means that if you miss class you are missing out on easy points. So when I had to sign up for RPW 210, I wasn't ready for another semester of useless classes. The first day I went in just hoping that the teacher was an easy grader and that it would be quick. You surprised me. When I started reading Thank You for Arguing I was still uncomfortable. As time passed Tyfa became important for life. Every day I learned a new skill that I tried to use with my other professors. Using it in real life or discussing it in class has become useful. So I would recommend continuing with Tyfa, in class discussions and in other “games” such as Ugli orange. The class always seemed to enjoy the debates, I... halfway through the paper... recommend reading it next time, but the standards are set by someone else. Science is a difficult topic for students to connect with as most of the time you either love it or hate it. Reading journals and discussion board posts about both books helped me remember and understand each set of chapters. Dividing chapters was the tricky part as most of the longer chapters were assigned during the week rather than the weekend. The use of technology in the classroom has been great as most students these days are proficient with it. Using Twitter and online resources to your advantage is something I would maintain. Having multiple credit opportunities especially helped when work piled up and therefore quality faltered. The teacher, presentation and general enthusiasm also helped because without it all the students' motivation would have diminished.
