THE BOX IS FULL OF STARS BUT THEY ARE NOT THE KIND OF STARS YOU CAN EXPRESSLY WISH ON It's a cold day and the sky is gray and all the benches look wet if you sat on them. Jimmy is sitting Indian style on our living room carpet and has drawn all the curtains so we can't even see the sky anymore. Jimmy doesn't look up when I come in, just sits with his eyes closed and hums at the top of his lungs. Jimmy keeps humming some kind of indistinguishable melody and moves his arms around his body and doesn't even look around for me. “Hey Jimmy,” I tell him, “Hey Jimmy, what's up buddy?” Jimmy says shut up please, Jimmy says "God, I'm searching inside myself for a song and could you please shut up." Jimmy always calls me God. Ever since I moved there, Jimmy always talked to me like I was God, partly because he likes to be close to spirituality and partly because I told him I was God. I didn't tell Jimmy what kind I belong to God and he didn't ask me. Jimmy has taken this box and is putting it on the floor. Jimmy says the box is full of stars but they're not the kind of stars you can make wishes on. Jimmy has this box on the floor and he keeps pushing this little button on the box and pretty soon the whole universe explodes out of this crazy little black box. About a billion stars project onto the ceiling and even all the walls and Jimmy spins all around. “Jimmy” I tell him “Hey Jimmy, you did something beautiful”. Jimmy continues to spin faster and faster, with his arms outstretched in every direction and his head tilted towards the sky. I tell Jimmy to stop spinning so much, I tell him to stop spinning otherwise he'll get dizzy but he's... middle of paper ......fuck this way where the seconds don't come count and the only way I can tell time exists is by how many children I pushed back into the whale room. I keep pushing the kids back into the whale room and I feel really good, you know, happy and really small. I feel like that kind of small where you feel safe but also important. I think being so small and keeping wandering children safe is the best thing I've ever done in my entire life. I think instead of trying to always be big, people should try to be smaller. If everyone tried to be a little smaller they would be much happier. If people tried to be a little smaller, the world would be a much better place. I don't mean that people should try to be small all the time, just sometimes, like at the Natural History Museum, or on busy sidewalks, or maybe during parades.
