Hinduism is one of the most complex, varied and diverse religions in the world, as there is no "rigid common set of beliefs" (Georgis, 62). For example, one may believe in only one god, or many gods, or no gods at all (Georgis, 62). You also have the freedom to choose how to practice your faith in terms of what rituals you practice, what texts you read, or what temples you choose to go to. In fact, “within Hinduism there is room for millions of major and minor deities, their temples and their priests” (Arostegui, 22/01). Now, even though Hinduism does not share a common set of beliefs, this does not mean that the concept of morality, or what is right and what is wrong, is lost in translation for those who practice the Hindu faith. This is because, in the diversity of Hinduism, there is a shared common concept; this is the concept of reincarnation and karma. According to Faris Georgis, and in the context of Hinduism, “life is determined by karma, where rebirth depends on moral behavior at an earlier stage of existence” (62). Furthermore, “Hindus see their level in this present life as based on their actions in a previous life. If their behavior in the previous life was evil, they may experience enormous difficulties in this life. The goal of a Hindu is to free himself from the law of karma, therefore, to be free from continuous reincarnation” (Georgis, 62). It is therefore fair to say that since 80.5% of the Indian population identifies as...... middle of paper... terms of being unable to financially support themselves and their families (Singh, 5 ). In rural societies, for example, rape, selective abortion, infanticide, and dowry-related murders occur at higher rates than in better-off Indian societies. Second, the Indian government has recognized that violence against women is an ongoing problem. within their society, which is why they passed laws such as the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971. However the problem lies in India's ability to enforce its own laws. With laws passed to curb violence against women, dowry deaths still occur, as do sex-selective abortions and even rapes. The criminal justice system in India is also in disrepair as most men accused of rape or even murder in India are never convicted..
