Violence is necessary to maintain a moral society. However, this statement remains a controversial issue for many individuals. There are those who consider violence immoral and useless. Others, however, consider it necessary only if it translates into benefits for the entire society. However, some individuals remain torn between both sides due to subjectivity in determining the need for violence. Pacifists see violence as an immoral act that results in further degradation of society. Individuals with this viewpoint believe in amicable conflict resolution in which opposing parties put aside their differences and work to reach a compromise. The conflict resolution process is long and fraught with numerous obstacles; ensuring correct communication is crucial to mitigating conflict. Effective communication depends on both parties listening to each other's arguments without making any prior judgments. It also involves developing sensitivity to one's cultural background. The presence of a neutral third party charged with the responsibility of mediating the conflict allows the conflicting parties to address their concerns in a rational manner. For example, countries in conflict rely on peace delegates to mediate conflict resolution talks to prevent war. Other nonviolent methods can also preserve morality. These methods deny the use of physical force or verbal threats while encouraging the use of peaceful methods to bring about lasting, positive political and social change. Pacifists also realize the negative repercussions of retaliating violence with violence. The nature of most human beings compels them to engage in counterviolence directed against the instigators of previous violent acts. Free will allows individuals to analyze situations and choose options that appeal to their moral sense. Violence born of oppression garners the support of many because it has the function of liberating the oppressed. On the other hand, violence resulting from wounded egos and failure to communicate is condemned as only seeking to advance the needs of the minority. The negative consequences of violence, such as loss of property and death, make it a costly affair which prevents parties to the conflict from resorting to it unnecessarily. Violence is necessary to maintain a moral society; however, it must lead to the good of the whole society and not seek to fuel inequality. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of individuals to analyze the consequences of violence and opt for positive ones.
