Diversity Considerations Diversity is a very controversial issue. It involves cultural awareness and some perspective relating particularly to an individual's upbringing or surrounding environment. Public service covers several professions including public defenders, courts, unions, and so on. Diversity is the key to public service values, social stability and open-mindedness. Furthermore, culture can have an effect on an individual's values, perceptions, human behavior, and interpersonal relationships. Culture includes traditions, lifestyle, specific religions, language, etc. Individuals are susceptible to adopting a lifestyle that leads to misconceptions. When different cultures meet, new perspectives are recognized and used. It can cause individuals to react positively or negatively. If there is ongoing cultural conflict, the company may not function properly. Cultural diversity allows more ideas to come into play. A magazine called “Electronic World” conducted a survey that said cultural difference can cause problems for cross-cultural businesses. There are groups that tend to be closer to each other due to cultural differences. There would be no problem because people are used to their way of doing business (Zhang & Huang, 2013). Individuals may speak differently from each other and their point of view may seem threatening, when in reality they are simply expressing themselves. Furthermore, discrimination occurs when people from a specific group are mistreated. Discriminatory factors have caused problems within the social structure. Specific rules within an organization should allow for any sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and so on. Social oppression can cause hatred through... middle of paper.... Mutual discrimination can hinder future business. In public service, people must work together to incorporate different perspectives. Law enforcement agencies gain credibility when they express concern for minorities. Within some public safety agencies, women are not allowed to rise in positions. Women are often invited to apply for the latest police recruitment exam. Women were not seen as qualified candidates due to stereotypes. Women are known to stay at home and take care of themselves (Lima, 2010). The police are committed to carrying out community policing activities. They target areas made up of minorities. Police have been known to disrespect civilians for many years, and this can cause people to push back. Some stopped minorities on highways for speeding or drugs. In most cases no drugs were found.
