This essay will explore the negative stereotypes that feminists encounter and how misogyny, racism, and sexism are present within these stereotypes. Firstly, to explore the idea of negative stereotypes against feminists/feminist movement it is important to have the same definition of feminism. According to Tarrant (2013) “Feminism is a social movement that seeks equal opportunities for all people, regardless of gender” (Pg 58). There are two negative stereotypes that we will focus on in this essay, firstly the idea that feminists hate men and secondly all feminists believe the same thing. There are various other stereotypes associated with feminists/feminism according to “All Diva Media” which exposes ten different stereotypes, however this essay will only focus on the two mentioned. To begin with, the first stereotype aimed at feminists/feminist movement is the idea that if you are a feminist, therefore, hating men would be meaningless and clearly contradicts the idea of the feminist movement. According to Tarrant (2013) “A central core of feminism is the idea that our biological sex does not determine our life goals, emotions, behaviors, and preferences and should not determine our opportunities” (Pg, 58). This is where sexism arises becomes present within this stereotype, my understanding of sexism is to discriminate against any individual because of their gender. This negative stereotype encourages the creation of sexism among women as they see men as not understanding this movement and vice versa when sexism is present men change their opinions towards women for the creation of this movement. With the creation of sexism also comes misogyny which to me means hatred of women. Since “all feminists hate men” is such a common stereotype, misogyny becomes present if one believes that women hate men, then this only antagonizes men into hating women.
