CeCe Bell has written a graphic novel about a young girl who becomes deaf. In this novel he addresses the theme of differences and disability. Other articles and books that address the same controversy include the textbook The for Hearing People Only, the textbook Mastering ASL, and the article Disability and Difference: Balancing Social and Physical Constructions. Disability and difference are a big problem today, especially for deaf people. The graphic novel is about a young girl (CeCe) who fell ill with meningitis and lost her hearing due to this disease. She begins the journey to accept herself as a deaf person and be deaf in her community. She is bullied and very unsure of herself and the use of her hearing aids. SheThere are two different types of the word deaf. Deaf with a capital D means your language is American Sign Language and you can choose to sign at any time. Deaf with a small d means you are hard of hearing and American Sign Language is not your primary language. Culture is defined as “the totality of socially transmitted patterns of behavior, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human labor and thought” (Zinza 53). In el Deafo CeCe is described as deaf because she uses hearing aids, does not use American Sign Language, and is not part of the deaf community. An example of her culture would be when she went to school where everyone had hearing aids, so she wasn't the only one with hearing problems. Culture can be described for any group of people, not just social difference, which holds that whether you have a disability is not important outside of responding to those conditions. Proponents of social difference focus on the social reaction to that of signal difference. They are saying that if I wasn't recognized as a disabled person then there would be no judgment and everyone would be treated the same at all times. Social difference advocates of the medical model argue “between limitations resulting from accident, age, or injury and those that affect a person from birth” (Koch 372). They believe that being deaf represents a community built around a shared language and experience, a difference. They don't believe that if you can't hear you have a disability. The World Health Organization (WHO) is a group that believes the world would be a better place if people did not have disabilities. This group supports the idea of eugenic selection. Eugenic selection is when people believe that when you go for an ultrasound and the doctor notices that the baby has a disability, you should have an abortion, no matter how far along you are. It's not even fair. An abortion, no matter how far along you are? Could it be 4 weeks or even 20 weeks or more? It's just inhumane in my opinion. I believe that el Deafo takes a stand on social difference. The author does
