Topic > Agricultural Biotechnology - 925

Famine has been an essential problem in the human world for years. Famine-stricken nations cannot produce enough food to feed their populations, and many of them starve. However, with the latest advancements in agriculture, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or otherwise known as Agricultural Biotechnology, the number of famine-affected countries may decrease and the famine dilemma may disappear. According to video no. 4, “Genetically modified food, GMO is an organism whose genetic characteristics have been altered by the insertion of a modified gene or a gene from another organism using genetic engineering techniques. You could say that agricultural biotechnology is a great way to reduce famine because genetically modified crops can be grown to produce more food than non-genetically modified crops. Just like any other creation, GMOs have both advantages and disadvantages. An advantage of agricultural biotechnology is that it can reduce fuel and water use and can allow more crops to be grown in many climates. In article n.2 “What is agricultural biotechnology?” it states that “agricultural biotechnology can help tackle climate change by reducing fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions, reducing soil erosion, as well as enabling the cultivation of crops in increasingly variable climate conditions.” This quote confirms my statement because it states everything I said except adding more. He said agricultural biotechnology is beneficial to the environment by reducing carbon dioxide and fuel use that can cause pollution. The second benefit of agricultural biotechnology is that agricultural biotechnology provides farmers with the ability to isolate plants without letting wildlife come into contact with the plants. These disadvantages may actually not be a disadvantage at all if you think about it. In conclusion, agricultural biotechnology has many advantages that can benefit the environment, the consumer, and the economy, as well as disadvantages that can harm the environment and consumers. The advantages of agricultural biotechnology can help create less pollution and solve the problem of famine in a nation and on the other hand, the disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology can damage the food chain and harm human health. There are many more advantages than disadvantages and most of the disadvantages can be solved if the scientist was more careful and tested the seeds before they were sent to the farmers. Therefore, for all these reasons, many people and I support agricultural biotechnology or GMOs.
