Claire Lee Chennault was born to John and Jessie Lee Chennault on September 6, 1890 in Commerce, Texas. In his storied life, he earned 17 medals including the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster. From school teacher to general, he was dismissed from service twice due to disagreements with other senior officers and commander of the Flying Tigers. The man even has an air base named after him due to his successful career; Chennault Air Force Base in Lake Charles. Starting his life early with the death of his mother, Chennault became a wandering child; hardly ever seen outside the woods near his home. In his novel “Way of a Fighter” he states that it made him confident and made him make his own decisions. Subsequently, he attended Louisiana State University for three years, but transferred to Louisiana State Normal for his senior year to become a teacher.
