Mount Saint Helens is a volcano located in southwestern Washington. It is 8,363 feet tall. Geologists say Mount St. (Saint) Helens is a stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano. Stratovolcano is a volcano built upwards due to layers of hardened volcanic ash, lava and other volcanic debris. These types of volcanoes are distinguished by their steep sides. They often detonate extremely explosively, putting nearby people and property at risk. The current name, Mount Saint Helens, was received in 1792 by a man named George Vancouver. He was a captain in the British Royal Navy at the time. The name was given in honor of the British ambassador to Spain, Alleyne Fitzherbert, who held the title Baron St. Helens. Three other Cascade Rage mountains were also named by George Vancouver. He had named them after other British naval officers. They are Mount Baker, Mount Hood and Mount Rainer. Many Indian legends have been passed down from generation to generation as to how Mount Saint Helens might have gotten its name. Before the volcano dangerously exploded, it was beautiful. It was a symmetrical, rounded mountain that sat between the peaks of Mount Hood (Wyeast) and Mount Adams (Klickitat). They were known as two extremely powerful peaks. According to one of many Indian legends, Mount St. Helens was, at one point, a wonderful woman with their name Loowit. The Great Spirit “Sahale” had two sons who fell deeply in love with her. Looit, however, couldn't choose which one he loved more. The two men decided to fight over her. Endangering many villages and ending up burying them. This had made their father, Sahale, furious with them. He decided to punish all three lovers and create... middle of paper... short temper and sleep problems.IV. RECOVERY More than 30 years have passed since the May 18 explosion. Citizens living in southwest Washington have reclaimed most of the land that had been destroyed. They cut down most of the burned trees and began planting new ones. The improvement in the amount of plants that regrew was partly dependent on other nearby ecosystems. Altitude also had a major effect on plant and forest recovery. The amount of animals has started to multiply now that they have a habitat to live in. Residents who suffered from PTSD had to go to therapy to recover properly. Their symptoms of depression and temperament improved with time and help. These people try to avoid any situation that could trigger thoughts or memories of the traumatic event that made them suffer. People are still recovering from this disaster.
