Attendance is a primary indicator of successfully completing a high school diploma and becoming a positive member of society. According to a study conducted on risk factors for absenteeism, “school absenteeism… is a major predictor of dropping out of school” (Ingul et. al, 2012, p. 93). Students who do not attend school do not graduate. Unfortunately, there are a disproportionate number of students with high absences who also suffer from mental health issues. When measuring the number of absences of students who also report receiving mental health services, another study found that the highest number of absences occurred among those students who reported receiving services (Askeland et. al, 2015). Overall it has been found that “young people with problematic school absenteeism tend to have a higher incidence of anxiety disorders, affective disorders, disruptive disorders, substance abuse or a combination of these” (Ingul et. al, 2012, p . 94). The combination of these challenges can make it difficult for students to achieve and earn success
