The nuclear family consists of father, mother and children. The extended family is a nuclear family with grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. The single-parent family is a mother or father living together with their children. European-Americans mostly belong to nuclear families. They tend to rely on nuclear families because their extended family lives far away from them. Euro-Americans hold individualism in high regard. They have much more freedom of choice than people of other cultures. They are encouraged at an early age, as they are expected to have free will. They view agency as residing within the individual. Their families are more prone to disintegration than the families of farmers and hunters. Farming and hunting families grew up in a home where everyone worked together to meet everyone's basic needs.
