Topic > Causes and Effects of Nationalism - 987

There are clear moments in history where you can see a country unite and move towards nationalism. Maybe it happened because of a war that was about to be fought or maybe it's just because of something a country felt strongly about. But just as there are times when a country is united against an enemy, there are times when a country is divided. When a country is united, however, it is incredibly strong, as has been proven time and time again throughout history. Nationalism played an important role in the revolutions initiated by countries. The American Revolutionary Era began in 1763. By then Great Britain had control over them and they wanted to start taxing them and enforcing other laws to maintain control over the Northern colonies. A terrorist group called al-Qaeda, founded by Osama bin Laden, took delivery of four American planes. Two planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, killing not only those on board but also many people in the building. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth crashed in a field after some people on the plane tried to fight back and reroute the plane after it had been taken over. Nearly 3,000 people died that day as a result of this attack, so it seemed natural that we would want to take revenge against these people who hurt us. We immediately went to war with Afghanistan, not wanting to risk them attacking us again. We nationalized ourselves as a country and united because of this event. There were police officers and firefighters from all over the country taking time off from working at home to help in New York in any way they could. People donated blood in the hope that it could help save someone who had been seriously injured that day. Men and women signed up to join the military because they wanted al-Qaeda to pay for what it had done
