In these cases only exceptionally are children the exclusive sexual objects. they usually come to play that part when some one who is cowardly or has become helpless adopts them as a substitute, or when an urgent instinct (which brooks no postponement) cannot at the moment lay hold of a more appropriate object.” (Freud, 96)Freud basically states in his essay that pedophilia is acceptable if the child is used as an exclusive sexual object and that children are only used as a sexual object if there are no other options. Freud also goes on to talk about the type of individuals who use children as sexual objects, explaining these individuals as cowardly or helpless, which essentially gives them an excuse to use them.
