Recently, American cinema has been the victim of countless horror films aimed at teenage audiences and based on some kind of urban legend. Films like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream, and The Blair Witch Project pollute countless aisles of video rental stores. These films are poorly conceived and produced; they fail to elicit any emotion resembling fear, doing a better job of making the film viewer laugh at the mediocrity of their inherent horror. The Ring is a screenplay by Ehren Kruger and directed by Gore Verbinski that is wonderfully more terrifying than other recently produced urban legend "horror" films. Protagonist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) brings realism and dramatic quality to the film, while frightening, morbid imagery and a next-level urban myth story serve to ensure this film remains a favorite among horror enthusiasts.
