Topic > the effect of water pH on plant growth - 559

The pH scale is used to measure the concentration of hydrogen ions and the acidic and alkaline content in a liquid. The abbreviation pH stands for percentage of hydronium ion. The pH scale starts from 0 which indicates the most acidic, to 14 the most alkaline and 7 the most neutral. Water is the only neutral liquid, but most other liquids are nearly neutral, slightly above or below a 7 on the scale. There are several soil factors that influence plant growth, including; “Soil bacteria, nutrient leaching, nutrient availability, toxic elements, and soil structure” (http://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/pubs/oh34.htm). Most plants prefer their soil to be slightly acidic, with a range of 5.5-7.0. Like most legumes, pisum sativum var. macrocarpons, also known as snow peas, prefer a soil pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. If the soil pH is slightly below neutral around 6.0, the No. pea plant will grow. 2 will grow faster than the others because pea plants grow best in soil that is slightly acidic.
