Linacre was founded in 1962 and was named after the influential Renaissance man, humanist, medical scientist and physician to King Henry VIII, Thomas Linacre (1460-1524), who also distinguished himself in Greek while studying at All Souls College. The college uses Linacre's achievements as inspiration for its ideals and purposes, encouraging academic vigor. He has also become a leading exponent of environmental issues and provides a foundation for students studying environmental change. It was the first Oxford College to achieve certified fair trade status and Oxbridge's first carbon neutral college – an achievement which did not go unnoticed by the Secretary for State and Environment. All students are expected to do their part and recycle as much as possible. Graduates only Linacre is the sixth youngest college in Oxford and accepts only graduates, of which there are around 300. These students are actively encouraged to present their research to colleagues for discussion and exchange. The college is committed to an equal opportunities policy and has a number of generous scholarships to help students in need. It was one of Oxford's first coeducational colleges and considers itself thoroughly modern with a reputation for good food and popular festivals. Colleagues, students and staff are not segregated, they all use a single common room and dine together in a room without a high table. There is a diverse international mix of students from over fifty countries. Despite being proudly modern, Linacre has realized that there are some Oxford traditions worth upholding and provides a formal lounge once a week, where evening dress is required. The common room offers the little treats that students need to function properly: tea.... .. half of paper ……four hours a day to meet the needs of nocturners and those who leave homework to the last minute.Student DoormenStudents are offered two ways to earn money to reduce their expenses (college financial account), they work in the student cafe or work a three-hour shift as a student doorman, which involves providing reception services and fire alarm management. The college is one of the few that is not affiliated with The Oxford Students' Union. Some religious institutions do not join for moral reasons and the union is seen as promoting contraception; Linacre's objections are entirely financial, believing that high taxes bring little benefit. Linacre has a group of passionate students who celebrate the delightful differences it has from more historic colleges which have repressive hierarchical structures and ferocious bowler hats wearing porters..
