In this compare and contrast essay I will compare two poems which are Daffodils by William Wordsworth and Daffodils by Robert Herrick. Both deal with the theme of daffodils. Wordsworth's poem was written in 1804 in the Romantic era. However Robert Herrick's poetry was written in 1591-1627 in the realistic era. The effect that flowers have on poetry is completely different from each other. To Daffodils written by Robert Herrick is about Robert Herrick describing the brevity of life and using nature to describe the brevity. “We die like the hours and wither away.” Compared to The Daffodils written by William Wordsworth, it is about enjoying nature and the simple things in life. . They use personification to connect them to the life of a human being walking in the woods alone and isolated and discovering how wonderful nature is. To daffodils by Robert Herrick is written in the first person plural form and the effect it has on us is how the reader thinks the actor and human are talking to people. Similarly in William Wordsworth's The Daffodils his poem is written in the first person singular. The effect that William Wordsworth's poetry has on me is that it shows me that he is thinking of nature and only needs the simple things in life. There were some similarities in these poems that have an effect on us too. The similes in To Daffodils are “like summer rain” or “like pearls of morning dew”. The effect these similarities have on us is depressing because summer is supposed to be warm, beautiful and a wide, bright blue sky. But instead it rains and when it rains the weather is bad and a bit grey. Similarly in The Daffodils by William Wordsworth I found a similar...... middle of paper ......Errick's poem is depressing, however William Wordworth's poem is sad and isolated but in the end he is happy. On the other hand the atmosphere of Robert Herrick's poem is one of sorrow because he does not have a daffodil, so it also makes the reader a little sad. However the atmosphere of William Wordworth's poem is painful at first, but towards the end it is joyful and makes the reader feel good that the writer is not sad. First of all, the overall message of Robert Herrick's poem is that everything ends and ends. While in William Wordsworth's poetry the overall message is to enjoy nature and the simple things in life. In summary, I found both poems enjoyable. I found To Daffodils entertaining because I liked the rhyming and flow of the poem. Likewise I found The Daffodils entertaining because it contains many similarities, personifications and metaphors and that is what makes an interesting poem..
