“When my father came out, my mother followed him to Mexico and I started living with a physical education teacher who tutored me for 6 months.” This was an in-depth experience for Rosa and helped her move away from home life and into a safe environment. When she was ready, Rosa went to live with her sister and niece and started college at 17. During this period, unfortunately, Rosa's father was deported and his citizenship was taken away. Rosa was part of an Upward Bound program that gave her the opportunity to spend every summer and live on a college campus. Rosa says “it was amazing!
