“On first looking into Chapman's Homer” was written by John Keats in October 1816. Chapman, George Chapman is the one who translated Homer's works , the great Greek poet "father of poets". This poem is in the form of a sonnet consisting of fourteen lines. It was considered Keats's first important poem, and it is about poetry, it includes a metaphor, "travelled through the kingdoms of gold", which is one of Keats' poetic techniques, which means that Keats reads a lot of books and that's what he inspired him. This poem includes an image of a Spanish soldier and adventurer Cortez and his men staring out into the Pacific (Cortez conquered Mexico in 1519, meaning he was more of a warrior than an explorer. This shows Keats' ambitions as a poet) . In this poem Keats talks about circumnavigating the world of literature and explains in detail what books he is reading. which is what makes this poem more interesting. The main theme of this poem is discovery, where Keats talks about his discoveries in his books. The first quatrain of the poem tells us how Keats discovers the world and includes many poetic techniques that make the poem more interesting. The first line begins with "Much have I travelled." It includes an inversion that places an emphasis on “Much” which tells the reader how much he has read. Secondly “travall'd”, this is a metaphor for reading and is a poetic technique that makes poetry more interesting. In the second line Keats talks about the kind of places he has been. “And many beautiful states and kingdoms were seen;” “good” is another metaphor for worthy literature. “States” and “kingdoms” are also metaphors that tell the reader what kind of places he has been. In the third line, “I have been around many a western isle,” Keats is saying… in the center of the paper… the magician talks about the opening of the world – sharing the experience with his men. Keats shares his insight with readers. The last line of the poem, “Silence, on a peak in Darien,” has a comma that allows the reader to stop and take in the effect of discovering the mountain top in Darien. Keats, in the last part of the poem (sestet) said many poetic techniques which made the poem more interesting. Such as inversions, similes and parentheses. The poem “On first looking into Chapman's Homer” is about Keats traveling through the world of literature with his books. He tells the reader in full detail about his travels through his books and shares with the reader his vision of where he has been. This poem is full of poetic techniques which made it more interesting and Keats successfully described the experience of his travels.
