Topic > Factors Influencing Health Care - 1088

“In this national sample, undocumented Latinos were less likely to report receiving blood pressure and cholesterol level checks, less likely to report receiving excellent/good quality care and more likely to not receive health/health information from doctors” (INTERNMed). Latinos are one of the significant groups facing disparities in health care (INTERNMed). An important question that public health investigates, to help understand why each community is different. In this essay, I will explain the factors that influence access to health care, the factors that influence the quality of health care, and analyze the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on inequities in the Latino community. Using the ecological model, we are able to see that public (social) policy is one of the main factors influencing access to healthcare. In public policy, we are able to use this as a perspective on how enforcement or restrictions can change person/community behavior. A restriction that through Societal is the Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). PRWORA was approved by President Clinton as a way to help those in need of work (AJPH). However, this law has created difficulties for those who are undocumented Latinos. When the system was in place, it created very few free and discounted care services for immigrants. This turns into a problem for many when they first enter the United States, especially when they enter sick. With higher prices to pay, immigrants try to stay away from any type of healthcare. Laws like PRWORA are set to get tougher. Review more documentation, such as social security and employment proofs. Since many of these documents are requested… middle of paper… migrants, residents, for example, may feel free to apply for Medicaid, however, there is still a five-year waiting period (Impact HR). In conclusion, access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, and the ACA all have factors that can disrupt or help the Latino community. An understanding of healthcare helps benefit the role of how many members of the Latino community are able to access it. When a patient enters the hospital/clinic, it may make a difference if they arrive with fewer symptoms than when they arrive at the emergency room. This is related to the quality of healthcare, when patients come with or without insurance. Finally, the ACA helps, like any other ethnic group, increase the number of applicants to obtain health insurance. However, for those who are not US citizens, this makes things more difficult for both them and their children who may be US citizens..
