For this assignment I attended a religious service at a Catholic church. I went to weekly Sunday mass at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville, Illinois. Since it was my first time going to Sunday mass and my first time going to a Catholic church, I decided to go with one of my Catholic friends, so he can help me and make me feel less like a stranger. He told me when to stand, kneel, and sit; and what to do. When I first entered the building I was overwhelmed by the look of the building inside and the amount of people who came to the service. As big as the church was, it was still full of people. When we entered, there was no one to greet us at the door; we just entered the church. The service lasted exactly one hour. We first started by sitting on the benches like everyone else, I chose to sit at the back so I could observe what was happening throughout the building as the service took place. Then during the service we would stand and kneel to perform various rituals. The interior of the church was very spacious and open. It has benches arranged in rows, where people sat, facing an altar at the front of the church. On each bench there was a booklet with the verses of the hymns that were sung. The walls were decorated with images of Jesus showing the process of crucifixion. Additionally, the windows were decorated with stained glass depicting Jesus and his disciples. There were also statues of saints around the corners of the building. When the service began I noticed that there was more than one priest. I assumed that there would be only one priest leading the service, however in this case there were...... middle of paper ......they were not dressed formally, as I thought, however, mostly everyone was dressed casually, while only a couple of people were dressed formally. However, as pleasant as the atmosphere was in the church, I still had a very awkward and uncomfortable moment during the service. After going to this service, I didn't really learn anything new about Christianity in general; I just understood better what and how Sunday mass is practiced in a Roman Catholic church. I have always been curious about what was actually done during Sunday service in a church and this visit clarified all my questions regarding this situation. I found it very interesting how everything was done and how everyone participated, even the priests. This experience made me realize that religions, in general, help bring together people of all ages, genders and races.
