In the Catholic faith, "marriage is a faithful, exclusive and permanent union between a man and a woman, united as husband and wife in an intimate union of life and love." That said, can a Catholic school fire a teacher because he or she obtained a gay marriage license? Another question to ask yourself is: is it against your right as an employee to lose your job because of your marriage choice or have you broken your contract with the school? My personal opinion is that the teacher knowingly accepted his teaching position in a Catholic school and also knew their religious values and rules, knowing this he broke the contract with the school. Michael Griffen lives in New Jersey, New Jersey was the 14th state to recognize gay marriage. The right was approved last October. As of June 5, 2013, there are 594,391 gay couples and 55% of Americans strongly support gay marriage. According to the New York Post, principal Father James McCloskely said: “Catholic school teachers must be required to follow all Catholic commandments.” The Catholic school's position is that, knowing this at the time of hiring, this teacher broke his contract and was therefore fired. According to the March 2011 Catholic School Teachers Contract, it states that “a teacher may be dismissed and the causes of such dismissal or dismissal may include; grossly immoral behavior inconsistent with the moral teaching of the Roman Catholic Church (as fully described in Governance No. 36 which is specifically adopted by reference); violation of any provision of this contract or of any school procedure or local policy, which action will result in dismissal of the teacher forced to teach for any other reason determined in good faith. Teachers like any other professor... half paper... employment. Just like the Wayne County Police, you cannot work as a police officer in Wayne County if you don't live in that city. They have to sign a contract stating that they live in that work city otherwise they are unable to work there and can be fired for breaking the contract they signed. I believe a person has the right to marry whoever they want. This is not a question of gay rights versus the Catholic Church. In regards to this, just like any other workplace, if you break a contract there could be consequences that could lead to job loss.
