2 Foot binding is one of Chinese cultures, which means beauty and torture. Furthermore, it means that a girl has achieved womanhood. Men think that foot binding is physically attractive to a woman. Foot binding may be torture for women, but it is part of the culture, and they must respect it, otherwise they will be considered unmarriageable and become concubines or servants. Foot binding was motivated in the 10th century by a dancer named Yao Niang, who bound her feet in the shape of a new moon to perform a dance before Emperor Li Yu. He was so enamored with her performance that he wrote verses about the beauty of Yao's feet. Women bound their feet to have a regal appearance and beauty that would attract a rich man into their life. “Footbinding is said to have been inspired by a 10th century court dancer named Yao Niang who bound her feet” (Amanda Foreman).3 Lily spoke of three types of love; laotong love, motherly love and family love. Laotong love was between Snow Flower and Lily, they spend their childhood together until they get married. The love Lily had for Snowflower was inexplicable, they loved each other like sisters, they cared for each other. Lily loves Snow Flower for being such a great girl, Lily admires Snow Flower for all the things she knows about life. They spend their time learning new things from each other. Lily began to show some love for Snowflower when they slept together in the upstairs bedroom. Mother's love was different from Laotong love, the love Lily had for her mother was immense, but her mother didn't show her a bit of love for her mother. Lily knew that even if her mother didn't show any love, her mother still loved her. how a mother would love all her children. LilyNu shu was a language that only women could understand, it was written with characters and each character had a meaning. The laotong send a fan with the nu shu character who tells their stories, their dreams, their successes and they express how they feel. It developed once they discovered that it could be a way to protect their dignity and convey their feelings and dreams to other women. Furthermore, they told how their wife lived and how their in-laws and husband treated them. The nu shu secret fan symbolizes the life of the laotong and also symbolizes a way of communication between them when they are not together. Snow Flower sent Lily the fan to start writing their journey as laotong. They wrote down everything that was happening in their lives in the fan, so they could save it as a diary between them. Lily and Snowflower sent the fan back and forth for years as they cared for their families and talked about how their day went and what was in their homes. Lily kept the fan because Snowflower was the last one to write there before she died and Lily never responded. Lily kept her fan with her during the Sitting Quietly Days.” I opened the fan, dipped the brush into the ink, and wrote what I thought would be my last entry. You who have always known my heart now fly above the clouds in the heat of the sun. I hope one day we will fly together”
