Over the last century, America has made great strides in equality. With the efforts of the civil rights and suffrage movements, all people gained the right to vote. We are even making progress toward marriage equality, and fifteen states currently recognize same-sex marriage. But despite all our progressive institutional movements forward, we continue to socially oppress women. Men's violence against women has become an internationally recognized epidemic and will continue to grow unless measures are taken to stop it. Domestic violence continues to be prevalent in the lives of many families and is the leading cause of homelessness for women with children in half of cases. Many women have been forced to change their behaviors for fear of being sexually or physically assaulted. One in three women experiences sexual or physical abuse in their lifetime. The first thing that comes to mind is that there are many people out there who abuse women. Many people with opposing views might argue that men can be victims of violence perpetrated by women, but in cases not used in self-defense, it is rarely part of a systematic pattern of power and control through force or the threat of force. In fact, 99% of rapes are perpetrated by men, but when men are confronted with the issue of violence against women, it is often met with denial. Jackson Katz writes in his book, The Macho Paradox, “We take comfort in the idea that the aforementioned child-raping murderer is a horrible aberration. A monster. We are nothing like him.”(Katz 30). The sad truth is that most raped women are raped by men they know, or even by men they love.
