Topic > The Luncheon by Somerset Maugham - 1301

The text I will analyze represents a story, entitled "THE LUNCHEON", written by an important English novelist, short story writer, playwright and essayist Somerset Maugham. First of all I would like to say a few words on the title of the text "Il Pranzo". The title of the text is rather ironic. If we consult a dictionary, we discover that the word "lunch" means "light snack", but as we will see below, a light snack turns into a large and expensive meal. The text represents first-person narration. The use of the pronouns "I", "mine", "myself" is predominant. E.g. "Did I remember?", "My heart sank", "as far as I'm concerned, I chose the cheapest dish". The plot of the text is as follows: the narrator, a book writer, recognizes a woman with whom he had lunch years ago. He begins to remember the unforgettable evening. He was young, living in Paris and barely making ends meet.
