MedeaMedea is a character existing outside of the typical Greek values and social systems that existed in the Greek Polis at the time of the beginning of the work. She is strong-willed, powerful, intelligent, cunning, volatile and independent. He possesses many traits and characteristics reserved for and associated with Greek heroes in other plays common at the time. It might be possible to assume that a typical Greek audience of the time (probably predominantly male) would find this character absurd and ridiculous. The reason for this is that Medea is a woman and as such would not be considered capable of such actions and thoughts as she displays in this play. What makes her credible is the fact that she is foreign. Not being a citizen of a polis, she grew up outside Greek society, considered the only civilized one. This is why her malice and contempt can be explained by her barbarity: “I am the mother of your children. Where can I fly, since all Greece hates the barbarian?" Her femininity was also pacified by being played by a male actor, but perhaps most significantly, Medea was written by a man. Euripides may be guilty of being too modern for her time, most likely explained by Medea's subsequent success after her death He focused on the realism of her character and created a realistic woman with recognizable emotions. She is neither a hero nor a villain and exists outside of the pre-established constructs of character in Greek tragedy. It may therefore be possible to consider the play as one of the first feminist works as some consider it, however, I believe otherwise. What made it acceptable to a Greek audience was that it showed how a barbaric woman could grow up. being as strong as an archetypal hero from Greek mythology she was unable to deal with that power and would ultimately harm herself and those around her because women are driven more by their emotions than their heads. Medea is an experiment to demonstrate to the audience that this is what happens when women occupy positions of power within society; justifies the current principle of Greek society and condemns all others. It is also important to remember that Euripides did not confer these masculine qualities on Medea herself, but simply recognized and accentuated those qualities already present from her mythological beginnings.
