In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel and in The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, symbolism is fundamental; the symbolism in every classic story helps the reader understand both the differences and the similarities. The authors used the representation of different subjects to illustrate the theme. Taking into consideration the characteristics of each narrative, both present contrasts. The themes and symbolisms are different but similar. Both pieces represent symbolism in unique ways. Multiple techniques of symbolism are represented in Life of Pi. Pi, itself is a symbol. It represents religion, strength and courage by surviving. The character of Pi is young and scared and also feeds on the presence of the tiger (). The tiger embodies fear. Pi tries to overcome his fear of the tiger. He is determined to survive and the only way to do so is to make the tiger his friend. Defeats fear; once Pi gets stronger, the tiger becomes less of a threat. “Fear” will help Pi continue to exist. Strength overcomes fear throughout the novel illustrating the relationship between Pi and the tiger. Another symbolic aspect of Life of Pi is the boat. The boat demonstrates stability and safety. Pi frees himself from the dangerous waters and has a type of refuge that is not the best but which will keep him intact. Pi's boat is a safety net for him; making sure he doesn't drown and from fear and possible death. Pi's “shelter” is one of the main reasons Pi survives his journey; because he is courageous; and strong. The boat helps transform Pi's character as he learns to adapt to life and improves his knowledge of survival. All these specific symbolic aspects fuel Pi and shape his character. The mask of the red death has symbolism to create... middle of the paper... helps the reader understand both the differences and similarities. Each story had its own unique symbols that define a thing, idea, or character. Symbolism is a story unto itself; describe and relate some things that tie the theme together. Both written works contain interesting symbols that help develop the character or characters. Fear is certainly the main hidden symbol in every story; the stories focus on avoiding or overcoming fear to survive. Most of the symbols in each story are dark and scary; but it is what influences an interesting and detailed theme. Works Cited Martel, Yann. Life of Pi: A Novel. New York. Harcourt, 2001.
