Topic > Pros and Cons of the Death Penalty - 1018

They should stay in prison for the rest of their lives and think about their crime every single day. If we as a society truly believe in human rights and two wrongs don't make a right, then the death penalty should be abolished. The evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of abolishing the death penalty. Let us now revisit the initial question we began with: is the death penalty a deterrent or a barbaric practice? We have seen that there is no definitive information showing that the death penalty deters crime. Additionally, there are over 3,000 people on death row in the United States. If we abolished the death penalty we could save over 150 million dollars a year and eliminate the risk of killing innocent people. Rather, the evidence leans towards the death penalty being a barbaric practice that violates the fundamental human rights that are the foundation of a civil society. The term “an eye for an eye” is as old as the death penalty itself, and the reasoning is equally antiquated. We as a society have moved beyond this way of thinking and it is time for our justice system to do the same and abolish death.
